About Windermere
Windermere is a great location to form a base to cover the whole of the Lake District, making us an ideal single stop location for visiting the whole area.
Windermere is within easy reach of Kendal, Ambleside, Keswick and Grasmere and is the ideal touring base for Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth country.
Getting About
There is a great public transport system – buses and lake steamers are really useful and make a break without a car viable. For guests traveling by coach or train, cars and mountain bikes may be hired locally or we can arrange minibus tours of the area. Guidebooks, maps and details of local walks are available.
We have great suggestions for circular tours by car which enable you to get a real feel for the area quickly. Lake cruises, bike hire, and mini bus tours are all available from the village
Out door pursuits
Walks of all types can be planned starting from the Archway. Fell walking trips are also available from the village.
There are endless possibilities for outdoor pursuits:
- mountaineering
- fell walking
- pony trekking
- fishing
- golf
- guided walks
- lake cruises
Places to visit
Visits to Beatrix Potter’s houses, the zoo, aquarium and super houses and gardens are all popular with our guests. Retail therapy is also possible, with Lakeland in the village and many interesting local shops.
If Gardens and Stately Homes are more to your liking - there are many within easy distance:
- Levens Hall
- Sizergh Castle
